About This Fishery
About This Fishery
Cardross Estate offers scenic riverbank fishing on the River Forth within 4,500 acres of parkland, woodland and farmland near the Lake of Menteith. The setting is quiet and rural, with wide views towards the Trossachs and a strong sense of seclusion along the river. Permits are sold through Fishing Around the Forth, making access straightforward for visiting anglers. The estate also offers accommodation and glamping, making it well suited to anglers looking for a peaceful fishing break in central Scotland.
Fishing Opportunities
The Cardross water offers salmon, sea trout and brown trout fishing on a gentle, meandering stretch of the River Forth. The river forms a mix of pools, glides and shallow runs, giving anglers a variety of lies to explore. Local knowledge suggests that water above the bridge is slower and deeper, favouring worm or spinning-style water, while below the bridge there are shallower, faster runs more suited to fly fishing. In higher water after a spate, there is also a chance of salmon or sea trout.
Conservation & Stewardship
Fishing at Cardross Estate is operated on a catch-and-release basis to support healthy fish stocks. The natural, largely unmanaged river corridor gives the fishery a wild character, with grasses, willows and brambles along much of the bank providing cover for fish and maintaining habitat value. Careful fish handling, sensible bank access and responsible angling are central to keeping this peaceful stretch productive and sustainable for future visitors.
Planning Your Visit
Cardross is best approached as a peaceful bank-fishing venue where preparation matters. Parking is available at three locations, followed by a moderate walk to the river, so anglers should study the location map in advance. In hot weather, early mornings and evenings are advised, while low-water conditions call for smaller, more natural-looking flies. Line management is important on these open banks, especially in windy weather. Wading is possible in some places, but much of the fishing is best done from the bank because of soft substrate and occasional deeper margins.
