About This Fishery
About This Fishery
Avon Valley Angling Association controls Beat 2 on the River Avon, a varied and highly underrated small-river fishery in the Forth catchment. The beat offers a mix of farmland glides, twisting runs, deeper pools and dramatic limestone gorge water, giving anglers a wide range of fishing in one permit. It is primarily a brown trout fishery, but sea trout and the occasional salmon add extra excitement. Members also benefit from shared access to federation Beats 3 and 5, extending the fishing significantly.
Fishing Opportunities
Beat 2 is mainly fished for brown trout, with sea trout and a few salmon also present. The upper farmland sections are excellent for hatches, dries and emergers, while the gorge suits nymphs, wets and methods that cover all three species. Sea trout become more likely from June onwards, and salmon are a bonus catch, especially later in the season. The river fishes best after a good spell of rain, particularly when levels begin to drop. Shared access to Beats 3 and 5 broadens the opportunities further.
Conservation & Stewardship
The River Avon has endured a difficult industrial history, from straightened upper reaches to heavy lower-river industry and pollution, yet it continues to recover and improve. Anglers on this beat benefit from that recovery and from the shared efforts of clubs managing the river responsibly. Respect for gates, farmland, riparian property and the wider river environment is an important part of the fishery’s culture. The continued improvement of the Avon is central to the value and promise of this beat.
Planning Your Visit
This beat is ideal for anglers who like varied small-river fishing and are prepared to adapt to changing water and terrain. Access ranges from straightforward farmland stretches to more adventurous gorge water, though footpaths help through the more dramatic sections. The river is at its best after rain, especially when dropping in summer. Bring suitable footwear for wet grass, muddy banks and limestone rock, and plan where to fish according to species, method and conditions. The shared federation beats also make it worth planning a full-day or overnight trip.
