About This Fishery
About This Fishery
The Allan Water Angling Improvement Association manages a much-loved stretch of the River Allan in central Scotland. The river is prized by regular trout, sea trout and salmon anglers because it rewards watercraft, observation and local knowledge. It can be fished for a full day or for short sessions with results. Its intimate scale, close proximity access and variety of water give the river a distinctive character that keeps anglers returning.
Fishing Opportunities
The Allan offers fishing for brown trout, sea trout and salmon across upper, middle and lower sections with very different character. The upper river has slower glides, broken water and deeper lies; the middle section cuts through gorge water with oxygenated pockets and named pools; the lower river provides excellent fly water and chances for sea trout and fresh salmon after a lift in water. The river rewards fly fishing, spinning in season and worming when permitted.
Conservation & Stewardship
The Allan is valued not only for fishing but for its healthy ecosystem. The river is notably clean, with little litter and strong wildlife presence. Anglers are expected to respect restricted water, follow marked no-fishing areas and fish responsibly within permit rules. Care around access, barriers, riverbanks and sensitive sections helps protect the character of the river and supports the long-term quality of the fishery.
Planning Your Visit
Plan where you fish according to river and weather conditions. In windy weather, the mid to lower sections can be the better option; in coloured or higher water, further upstream may be more productive. The upper river involves long walks, so travel light, take food and water, and think carefully about footwear. In warm conditions, wet-wading may be more comfortable than full waders. Always check access points, parking and return crossings before starting.
